  • PVIs on the pipe run profile has been reduced to simply cut lengths and elbows. 
  • The dynamic column was eliminated from the Pipe Run Profile dialogue. 
  • The Pipe Run Profile Dialog now includes a Reference Profile. At PVIs, break cut lengths 
  • The tooltip’s text for “Cleanup PVIs” has been changed. 
  • Default cut length from feature settings should be used if there isn’t one in the parts list. 

Corridor Solid Property Set & Targeting

Based on BIM requirements, Civil 3D 2023 expands the property set data for corridor solids. Additionally, it includes options for targeting filter corridors, multiple surfaces, and dynamic targeting of particular layers. 

The functionality has changed so that after choosing a layer as the target, all additional items added to that layer will be dynamically added as targets.

The 2023 version adds even more capability to reporting and tables by enabling the display of quantity totals for rows and columns as well as customized remarks. These values are shown in the Object tab and report when you enable the Total Cell setting. 

By setting the Total Cell to yes in the Object Sets, you can display the totals row for AutoCAD tables. The Edit Table Styles feature gives you complete control over the text size and row heights for tables. You can individually change the total rows and data rows’ sizes and texts in this window. 

  • Display totals in the Project Explorer dialogue box 
  • Create rows and columns for total quantities

  • Compare COGO points and parcels to feature lines 

Viewport Enhancements

Viewport Enhancements- AutoCAD Civil 3D 2023

When you access a Profile or Section View viewport in older versions of Civil 3D, it would draw every entity there. If a pipe network is present in a section view, for example, the full pipe network is rendered each time you enter the viewport. The performance is significantly impacted by this. 

The following entities will not be drawn for viewports in paper space that are set to Profile or Section View types in Civil 3D 2023: 

  • Pipe networks 
  • Pressure pipe networks 
  • Surfaces 
  • Alignments 
  • DBGraph entities (profile view, section view, mass haul view, superelevation view) are not within the viewport range 

This will speed up transitioning between model and paper space in typical designs that include those viewports by about 50%. It will also be quicker to publish. The performance improvement increases linearly with the number of profile and section viewports in the drawing. 

The only drawback is that you must use the REGENALL command to update the aforementioned entities in the view if you zoom in or relocate the viewport position.

The SiloData platform from Arskan combines the Arskan Codec with its universal viewer, Arskan MoveInside, to provide a “full set” of technology solutions for seeing, managing, and sharing 3D data on the web and the go. According to Arskan, the platform allows clients to create interactive, collaborative, and real-time digital twins.

Compression without Loss 

Mesh data is compressed in the cloud or on a server using the Arskan Codec, then delivered to a desktop or mobile device for viewing in a browser. Mickal Pastor, technical director at Arskan, explained how a 5 GB mesh was scaled down to just over 50 MB for a recent industrial project, so it could be downloaded to a mobile phone over 4G in “a matter of seconds.” 

The dataset is decompressed once on the local device, and the visualization can adapt to different degrees of detail. Decompression can be progressive, allowing the user to view the mesh before it is fully compressed. 

Arskan is developing technology that allows decompression and viewing to begin before the complete dataset has been downloaded to the local device for very big meshes. Arskan is currently working with a 200 GB mesh of a cathedral reduced down to 2 GB thanks to new ‘out of core’ technologies.

The CAJuN Project – Automation of Digital Twin Creation 

A vehicle park in France has been designated as a test site for its digital twin solution. The CAJuN project, created in collaboration with Lyon Parc Auto, a specialist in public park parks, and INSA, a public scientific research laboratory for image computing and information systems, aims to investigate predictive maintenance of the 28,000m2 LPA Cordeliers car park and company headquarters in Lyon. 

The CAJuN Project’s point cloud also uses AI for ‘unsupervised pattern recognition’ to evaluate the data and give an inventory of recurring shapes. Over 100 fire extinguishers were categorized and tagged with maintenance information for asset management purposes. AI is also being used on point clouds to recognize barriers and further reduce the file size by reducing the number of points on the mesh. 

As the CAJuN project progresses, it may be used to manage other car parks in the region and serve as the foundation for future commercial digital twin solutions covering a variety of assets such as industries or even nuclear power plants.

Foreign Investors have Flocked back to US Real Estate with a $21 B Pot

Foreign investors made up for lost time during the epidemic by investing $21 billion in multifamily properties in the United States, pivoting their focus away from key coastal cities and toward the Sun Belt and second-tier areas.

Last year in 2021, international multifamily investments increased to 30%, up from 24% in 2019, while spending on office assets decreased to 14% from 27% in 2019.

According to Deloitte, The US commercial real estate property sector saw a boom in investment activity in 2021, with volume increasing for 5 of the 6 quarters after the outbreak.

Despite continuing uncertainties about inflation levels, supply chain constraints, closure measures, and travel restrictions, last year’s total of approximately $809 billion1 in commercial properties topped the preceding year by over 80% and blasted past the previous record high in 2019 by 35%. 2

Increased confidences about income growth, combined with the asset class’s stable returns, has pushed the US real estate sector back to the forefront of investor appetites, at least domestically.

Yet, foreign investors purchasing real estate in the United States were absent from this rise for much of 2020 and early 2021. Prior to the second quarter of 2020, foreign investors could account for up to 20% of overall real estate investment activity or $100 billion per year.

As global investors shifted their focus back to domestic concerns during the peak of the pandemic, combined with evolving restrictions on international travel, volumes into the United States from abroad dried up to as little as 7% of total US real estate deal activity, a level not seen since the global financial crisis of 2007–2008.

The situation transformed in the second half of 2021 when travel restrictions were relaxed with the vaccination distribution and confidence about new growth patterns bloomed. One notable example was the German real estate fund Union Investment’s foray into the US apartment market late last year with a $227 million purchase of a two-building complex in Fort Lauderdale.

Union had previously invested in office buildings with long-term credit tenant leases, which were seen to be more secure for investors seeking consistent cash flow. According to Riaz Cassum, executive managing director, capital markets, and global head of international capital coverage for JLL, the fund was enticed by the multifamily property’s low capitalization rate and limited continuing capital requirements.

According to Matt Vance, senior director and Americas head of multifamily analysis for CBRE Econometric Advisors, there is more capital and dry powder in the world now, with the focus on investing in commercial real estate.

Industrial vs. Multifamily. The Choice

Foreign investors in the United States have a history of focusing on big assets such as CBD central business district offices, industrial, large regional malls, or luxury hotels, and adhering to a small number of primary markets with high liquidity. However, this is changing as investors seek multifamily, industrial, and specialty property types such as student housing and data centres.

Non-US investors are also shifting their focus from big metros to capitalize on the economic potential of emerging cities, particularly in the Southeast and Southwest. Foreign investors are relocating their capital to places they believe will perform well in the next cycle.

According to Marcus & Millichap, the percentage of foreign capital invested in the top six core markets (New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, and Washington D.C.) fell to 37.8 percent in the first half of 2021, down from 46.8 percent in 2019 and 57.9 percent in 2015. During that time, cities such as Seattle, Charlotte, Dallas, Atlanta, and Phoenix grew their market share.

International investors have moved their attention to U.S. multifamily constructions as a result of the asset class’s outstanding performance, particularly in secondary markets and suburban regions that are enjoying the most robust demand and rent growth.

Canadian investors have been especially active, typically being more familiar with smaller metros outside of the handful of higher-density gateway areas that have traditionally drawn the greatest attention from non-US investors.

Although multifamily development is now surpassing industrial growth, demand for industrial remains robust. Construction on warehousing alone increased by 40% in February 2022 compared to February 2021.

Furthermore, Dodge Data & Analytics predicts $53 billion in construction projects in the US warehouse and distribution centre market this year, accounting for more than one-third (36%) of the total US commercial construction sector this year. According to JLL, the United States will require 1 billion square feet of commercial real estate space over the next five years to meet e-commerce demand.

The two real estate giant industries, Industrial and Multifamily have become the ‘apple of the eye’ for Global Investors.

Private equity has a strong belief in both the multifamily and industrial sectors, and it is investing in both sorts of projects. Both multifamily and industrial real estate demonstrated adaptability to the economic and sociological upheavals accelerated by the COVID-19 epidemic. Stainless Steel’s Sustainability Credentials in Architecture & Construction

Stainless steel is an inherently green material because it is 100 percent recyclable and does not degrade or deteriorate in quality. The stainless steel we are making now has the potential and should be used for generations to come. It is the world’s most recyclable material.

The stainless-steel business is becoming more committed to improving manufacturing techniques and practices, utilizing raw materials as effectively as possible, and minimizing any environmental impact.

Stainless steel is a long-lasting material in architectural and industrial usages. When properly specified, stainless steel will withstand the rigors of a certain demanding conditions.

Stainless steel is a reusable and recyclable product, which contributes significantly to the sustainability of the key resources used in its manufacturing.

Stainless Steel’s Superpowers

  • Corrosion Resistant – Stainless steels (steels having at least 10.5 percent chromium) have superior corrosion resistance across a wide range of applications. The existence of an inert, self-forming, and repairing layer of chromium oxide gives stainless steel its corrosion resistance, isolating the metal’s iron from the atmosphere. The corrosion resistance of the material can be improved further by increasing or decreasing the proportion of specific alloy metals in stainless steel. 

Architecturally, Stainless steel is globally accepted as an excellent choice for specifiers. Chrysler building in New York, which has been in situ for more than 80 years having only been cleaned on 2 occasions, reinforce this fact.

  • Durability – When the structural properties of stainless steel are combined with its corrosion resistance, it results in an extremely durable product. As a result, when compared to other architectural materials such as aluminium or steel, stainless steel has a very extended life cycle.

The 316 (1.4401) is the grade of stainless steel most suitable for polluted, industrial, or marine environments on account of its higher corrosion resistance than other standard grades such as 304 (1.4301). Therefore, in urban façade type applications where pollution coupled with the likelihood that a regular cleaning regime will not exist or be adhered to, 316 would generally be the specification of choice.

  • Recyclability – Stainless steel is 100 percent recyclable. It can be reused and recycled without losing its qualities or performance.

Stainless steel contains a high percentage of recycled material. Following a case study conducted by the International Stainless-Steel Forum (ISSF), it was determined that the recycled content of stainless steel is 60%. The ISSF calculates that recycled steel accounts for 70% of the input in Europe.

Stainless Steel’s Sustainability & Environmental Impact

Due to the very high levels of recyclability and durability, stainless steel has a substantially smaller environmental impact than would exist if manufacturing was solely from primary material sources. In conjunction with advancements in manufacturing practice, the increasing amount of recycled content in stainless steel helps reduce energy consumption, emissions, and, as a result, the carbon footprint of the mills that produce it.

A stainless-steel product has little or no runoff or contamination, keeping it hygienic and resulting in little or no pollution of our land and waterways. There is also a reduced need for regular cleaning due to the excellent corrosion resistance.

There is a significant reduction in the impact of stainless steel on landfill disposal, further decreasing its environmental impact. Stainless steel recycling is financially driven rather than through tax breaks for recyclers, and thus self-sustaining.

The demand for basic resources such as nickel or molybdenum ore is minimized, hence reducing the physical damage and pollution associated with mining.

The environmental impact of building materials is becoming increasingly critical. 

Stainless steel is completely recyclable, and there is no limit to the amount of recycled waste that may be utilized. Metal loss due to corrosion may introduce harmful elements into the environment.

Since Stainless Steel is naturally corrosion-resistant, no protective coatings are required, and the negative environmental impact associated with coatings (VOC outgassing, replacement, and recycling) is eliminated.

Also, cleaning stainless steel does not necessitate the use of acids or harsh chemicals.
